The Hard Way to the Queen Charlotte Islands

Join Jim Heumann and Karen Sullivan for a virtual voyage "the hard way" to the Queen Charlotte Islands in their Dana 24, Sockdolager, during the summer of 2009.  What's the hard way?  Let's just say they took the sea-road less traveled.  Was it worth it?  You be the judge.  But after seeing their fascinating photos and hearing them perform their new song about the trip, we think you know what your answer will be.

Cruise to the South Pacific

Steve Berg and Patty Carp left Port Townsend for a 3 hour sail - oops - I mean a 3 year voyage on their Pacific Seacraft 37 - Serenity.  By the time they got back to Port Townsend - they sailed 35,000 miles.

Their voyage took they down the coast as far as Equador, then west to the Galapagos Islands, Marquesas, Tuamotus, French Polynesia, Cooks, Niue, Tonga, New Zealand, Figi, Vanuatu, Australia, Tasmania, back to Tahiti and the Marquesas, Hawaii and home.

They will share with you their highlights and insites and answer any questions you have about planning a trip south.

Seminars

Frank Schattauer - Schattauer Sails:  Frank, has  been involved with making cruising sails since grade school.  He and his brother Axel took over the sail loft in 1985, that was started by their father  Franz, in 1959.  Frank is a sailor himself and very knowledgable.  Frank will talk about cruising sail inventory, when to use what sail, sail maintenance and anything else you might want to know about sails.  Schattauer Sails

Eric Schouten - SEA Marine:  Eric is an ABYC Certified Master Technician.  He is very knowledgable about boat electrical systems and has a special interest in Corrosion.  Eric will talk (either Friday afternoon or Sat. morning) on the topic of Corrosion caused by electrical currents - 12V and 110V.  This should be a very interesting and informative talk.

Food

The Friday Night Potluck BBQ is very informal.  We will have a BBQ grill fired up so you may cook whatever you bring.  Also, bring something to share - a side dish or a dessert.  Come and mingle and meet everyone.  If you didn't bring your boat and would like to crew with someone who will be racing on Saturday - make yourself known.  If you have a guitar or other musical instrument - bring it.

Neptunes Feast - Saturday evening.  Catered by Mystery Bay Seafood.  This will be held at the new Sailing Foundation.  The Feast includes:  Steamed Clams, BBQed Oysters, Seafood Chowder, Dungeness crab, Salmon, Corn on the cob, salad and dessert.  If for some reason you do not care for seafood, let us know and we can substitute something else.  The Kids menu will also include hot dogs and mac & cheese.

After you register here, please fil out this form and include it with your check.

Thanks!
